Right now Anthony and I are working on alternative energy sources and just doing basic research on the topic to see what kinds of alternative energy are being used and to get an idea of what type of bill could be created. If you are interested in this topic, I suggest you do the same basic research. The more ideas we have to work with, the easier it will be to break down our group into smaller interest groups. If you find anything, post it here so we can all see. Thanks.
I am also interested in researching alternative energy sources. I'm not really sure on exactly how we would do this, but first we need to be break up the group, and then we can get started on finding other sources of energy.
I am currently researching background information on global warming, greenhouse gases, and their emissions. This information will help us narrow down a target for our bill. When I gather the information, I will create power point slides and send them to people in our group.
So far, it seems that me, Mary, Joanna, and Hannah are interested in alternative (renewable) energy sources. If this isn't true, or if someone else is also interested, let us know here. Otherwise, I assume this is our final group.
I am also interested in alternative energy, but I don't think ethanol/biomass qualify as renewable (like wind and solar) so this will likely be a separate group, unless no one else is interested. Otherwise, especially if no one speaks up, I'll probably just join the current group, and hope it isn't too unwieldy.
As of now i've been doing some research on the alternative energy sources. I'm looking mainly at the science behind some of the possibilities and trying to figure out why and how one method might work while another doesn't. As for splitting the group, I'm not sure what we'll do. It might not be a bad idea to meet so we can discuss this.
One way we can split the group is by some people doing alternative fuel (like ethanol), and others doing renewable energy (like wind, solar, water, geothermal, etc).
In my research I have found some info regarding transportation emissions and their effect on global warming. Rather than concentrating on promoting alternative energy or renewable resources, I was thinking on proposing a bill that is about restricting transportation emissions. This includes public and private transportation. Areas of focus would be promoting hybrid cars, stricter testing for emissions, limitations on cars with low gas mileage, buses/trains/planes emission testing(although I need more research on this), and limitations on gas consumption just to name a few. Anyone interested in this???
I was researching a policy that was voted on in Colorado reguarding the future breakdown of the amounts of renewable energy used. I came across a information for NJ as well and it turns out that our state has one of the strictest policies concerning the future use of renewable energy. Below is the link if you want to check it out.
I'm also interested in reducing or restricting car emissions as well, I think that it would be easier to propose a well written bill on this topic. In my research I have found a lot of information available on reducing car/transportation emissions and I think that since its an everyday problem, it is something that relates to everyone.
Here is a breakdown of greenhouse gas emissions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Greenhouse_Gas_by_Sector.png
Again, transportation is in no way the major contributor, and although it does contribute quite a bit to CO2 and CO2 makes up 72% of GHGs by parts, CH4 is 6 times worse in terms of capturing heat, and transportation doesn't contribute to that at all. So try not to limit yourselves simply to transportation and emissions. We are the global warming group, so it makes some sense to focus on emissions, but on the other hand if cleaner fuels aren't promoted in general we'll still run out of petrol and it wouldn't provide a lasting solution.
BTW, landfill gas is pretty sweet. Rutgers has this experiment station located by a landfill and they fuel the garbage trucks on that. Taking gas out of the landfill also lets them compact more. It's as clean-burning as anything, although I guess that still means we would have to look at emissions. Does anyone feel like this group should really be the global warming/alternative energy group instead?
Also, I propose we all actually come in on Wednesday this week, maybe just the second period. It's not like we're not all free those class periods, and at least one face-to-face meeting to determine groups and topics *now* seems really necessary.
I think that reducing/restricting car emissions would be something interesting to do. The bill would be for everyone and with the proper research it might be easy to do too.
Wednesday morning at all wont work for me due to my biochem lab so ill continue my view here. We were instructed to be specific on our topic hence the transportation issue and regardless of whether transportation is the major contributor is not the issue here. We just need to pick one aspect of our topic and concentrate on that. Its still unclear to me what type of bill you guys are considering. Perhaps i can get filled in at a later date after you guys have the meeting. With that said, Im fairly confident that ill be doing the project on that. Just gotta figure out who wants to tag along...
sorry guys tomorrow isn't a good time for me, but since we're only deciding about splitting the group...I think that since it appears that kkrueger, kez8718 and I have the same interest in reducing/restricting car or transportation emissions that we should form a group, and if anyone else is also interested in proposing a bill on this topic please feel free to let anyone of us know that you want to jump on board as well.
If few people are able to meet tomorrow, I'm probably not going to come either since I live 45 minutes away and my next class isn't until mid afternoon. I also have an exam to study for.
As for splitting up the group, it looks like we've broken it down to this:
I unfortunately can't make it either, I have a very long paper that is due Thursday morning that I need to work on all day tomorrow. If the group splits the way Anthony has said in the previous post, I would be more than happy to join the car emissions group. For those in that group, I will start focusing my research on possible ways to reduce emissions that we could formulate a bill around. Let me know how the meeting goes, and when we will meet next.
I haven't heard anything from anybody in a while. Did we make a final decision on how we are splitting up the group? I am assuming that I'm working on the car emissions project, which is what i've been focusing on. If this isn't the case, or if any of you feel the need to have a meeting, let me know.
There was an article Associated Press Nov 9 by Samanthat Young pA10 www.phillyburbs.com/intell concerning car emissions. Nj along with several other states, joined CA in a law suit against the EPA which would allow the states to implement an anti-pollution law. Find out about this.

I agree that we should meet, to at least split up the group once and for all if nothing else.
I am willing to meet at 10:55 on Wednesday like Emily suggested.
i am also willing to meet at 10:55 on wed. see you then!

As for splitting up the group, it looks like we've broken it down to this:
Renewable energy:
Anthony (me)
Mary
Joana
Hye-Na
Car emissions:
Kevin
Kimberly
Linda
Unclear:
Emily
John

I think our final groups are:

Joana
Hye-Na
Emily
Car Emissions:
