Hi guys,
Just wanted to make sure that we were meeting up on Wednesday. I can't stay too long, only an hour or so because I have an exam. But I'll bring the articles I've been reading. Also, Dr. Fagan called and asked if we wanted to set up a group appointment with her. What do you think? I missed the time that she was available for calls, so I'll call tomorrow, so let me know as soon as you can!
Thanks,
Ann-Marie

Hey,

I just tried emailing you both through the yahoo group thing we have, but I think it no longer exists?

I want to meet up tomorrow, but can we meet up around 10:30am instead? I wantto catch a class that I missed today. It ends at 10:20am. Let's meet up at the loree computer lab.

This one is really good. It has some statistics that compare plastic and paper recycling.

Hello,
I found bills for two cities in California that have bans on plastic bags. I found a proposed bill for Annapolis. I also have an article from the New York Times that says that Boston, Baltimore, Portland, oregon, Steamboat springs, Co., and Santa Monica also have bill that are waiting for approval. Maybe someone could look a bit more into that.
Since we are focusing on charging for bags, I did some research and found that Ireland has a really successful program that has dramatically reduced the number of plastic bags consumed. I'm going to further look into that program and also see if other countries in Europe of similiar programs.

I found some information that tells the downside to Ireland's plastax. I think it reiterates the point that one is not better than the other, but that both should have a charge, thus encouraging the use of reusable bags.
I made more slides with facts from the EPA about paper and plastic bag waste.
Also, since we were meeting up tomorrow, do you think we could go in at 9:15 as scheduled? It would help me out a lot, plus maybe we can be the first to talk to her. Just let me know.
See you tomorrow!

This is what Ann-Marie & I worked on in class today and handed into Professor Fagan:

Goal: Place a charge/tax on paper and plastic bags to reduce their use and encourage the use of reusable bags

Harm to the environment
•Plastic bags effect on wildlife; landfills

Similar Legislation
•San Francisco – ban
•Oakland, Ca – ban
•Annopolis, Boston, Baltimore (proposed bans)
•Ikea – charge for plastic
•Whole foods – refund for plastic
•Berkshire – charge for paper – no plastic
•Ireland – charges 22 cents per plastic bag
•New Jersey – Bill for recycling plastic bags

Pro/Cons of Paper & Plastic bags
•Plastic takes up less space in landfill
•Less pollutants to make plastic
•Less energy to recycle plastic
•Paper – more energy to recycle
•Oil is needed to make plastic bags
•Banning plastic leads to increase use in plastic
•Shoplifting and health concerns from contamination of cloth bags

Solution: don’t charge for just one, both need to have a charge/tax since one is not better than the other. Encourage use of reuseable bags.

So far what we have accomplished
•researched different bills in the country about paper/plastic ban/charge
•started powerpoint presentation

This week:
•We will begin to outline the bill and format it

Professor Fagan gave us some articles to use but we looked through them.

Ann-Marie and I agreed to meet up next week to work on the bill so we'll see you there!
Saman, if you have any questions, let me or Ann-Marie know and we'll fill ya in.

Sorry I haven't kept in touch this week, I've been really busy with assignments and exams.

I just wrote alot and lost all of it!

Okay, I've started on the power point presentation about 2 weeks ago. I've done the background information and researched on the damages caused by manufacturing of paper and plastic. We should look into land pollution, animal endangerment and deaths, air pollution, future risks for humans, energy consumption by the production of these products.

Ann-Marie found some interesting articles regarding other countries that have already enforced charges per bag. Statistics showed that pollution and usage were reduced by that enforcement. We can go ask a few stores about how many bags are used per day.

Also, what time do you want to meet up tomorrow? Let's meet up at the Loree computer lab again. I'll be working on the slides today, so if you want me to do a certain part of the project let me know.
Call or email me to confirm the meeting and time.

Alright, see you both tomorrow!

Hey,
I will be there tomorrow morining at 9 15. We are all meeting in Loree right?
I will be bringing the slides that I have made so far, and my sources.
I was hoping that we could pretty much finalize the project. We can put all our slides together, and assign parts of the bill to be written.
I'll see you tomorrow!

Christine L. said...

I'll be there at 9:15 @ Loree. Is there class tomorrow? Don't we have to hand in a written assignment telling her what we've individually been working on?
Ann-Marie, did you make the slides for the stuff that we wrote down for her last wednesday? Did you want me to make the slides for those?

Today, Ann-Marie and I worked on the powerpoint presentation. So far we have the following slides:

1. Paper production/manufacturing
2. Plastic production/manufacturing
3. Disposal of paper and plastic: landfills and recycling center
4. Enivronmental affects caused by paper production/tree logging
5. Environmental affects caused by plastic production
6. Statistics/evidence of environmental damage, animal endangerment, animal death, pollution, energy consumption, oil/fuel usage
7. pros/cons
8. What is the solution?

We haven't started the bill proposal yet, but we know what to do with that. We discussed the following today:

Charging per bag at grocery stores and retail stores

Purpose: To reduce the usage of plastic and paper bags. To conserve the environment. Educate buyers and consumers about the affects of manufacturing paper and plastic bags. Educate people on how to reduce usage and dispose properly.

Enforcements: charging per bag, fines and penalties.

If there is anything we should add or include in the presentation, let me know.

Hey Guys,
I somehow lost my flash drive, which had my most complete copy of the presentation. I'm really sorry, but Saman, if you could send me what you have, that would be great. I e-mailed Dr. Fagana and asked her if I could pick up the hard copy that we handed in so that I could retype any of the slides that I was missing.

Besides that bad news, our Bill is due on Wednesday and I have a very busy schedule and would prefer to get this done as soon as possible.

I can do the first three sections, the definitions seem like a lot, but if the other sections are too much for you guys, I can take them on too.

hii~
I actually already started working on the bill and have the general outline of it. I just wanted to make sure that some of the numbers (deadlines, start date, fines, etc) were reasonable and what you girls thought of them. I'll send out a copy of what I have to you girls via email at the latest by tomorrow (I need to finish some definitions and the closing statement).
Can either of you girls send me a copy of the complete presentation so that I can make sure that I got all the important facts covered in section 2 of the bill?

hey girls~
i wrote the cover sheet (which i will post on the yahoo groups page).
I sent it as an attachment to an email to Professor Fagan but I am not sure if she got it (remember how she said that she gets a lot of junk mail?) so I also sent it to Mr. Farruggia (the guy who does all the email sending and forum) and asked him to forward it to Professor Fagan. So hopefully it got to her.
A couple of things...
Whose return address did we want to put on the cover sheet? (i can leave mine on there or if someone else wants to be the main correspondent, i am more than willing to put their address down) And i guess it will be more official if we sign the bottom of the cover sheet (i'll bring the copies to class next week so we can sign them).
Let me know what you think.

Ann-Marie said...

I definitely agree that we should all sign it. And since we only need one return address, youcould put yours if you want.
I'm not sure if we are supposed to post the power point for tomorrow or if we post it after class.
Do you know?

Christine L. said...

Hey girls,

Yea, i just sent an email back to you (Ann-Marie) asking if we are suppose to wait for a go-ahead by Professor Fagan or if we can just post them up. Some groups already have them up so i was wondering if they heard from the professor or if they just posted it up. I guess we can...if anything, we can take it down and make any changes (if necessary) and then post it back up.

Hey girls!~
i have the CD with the powerpoint, bill, and cover letters on it. And I will bring a hard copy of the powerpoint, the bill, and a cover letter (just one should be ok right?) And I also have the four cover letters with a copy of the bill for each senator, with 4 envelopes.
!!! We're done girls!!!~ see ya tomorrow!
